From 1 October 1953 to 31 October 1956, Kurnool was also the state capital of Andhra State (not Andhra Pradesh), which was carved out of Madras State in 1953. Tanguturi Prakasam was the chief minister of Andhra State during this period. The present day District court buildings were used by the State

 Marri Chenna Reddy of the Congress who ruled from 1978 to 1980, was replaced by Tanguturi Anjaiah who remained in office till February 1982. He was later substituted by Bhavanam Venkatarami Reddy and subsequently by K.V. Bhaskara Reddy, both of whom ruled for short interim periods.In this period in the  Kurnool district JNP-4  INC-9 IND -1 elected
